-Rector Praises President Tinubu’s efforts to change the face of Polytechnic Education in Nigeria.
The 44th Matriculation Ceremony of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana (PolyUnwana) held on Friday, March 28th, 2025 with total of 2,524 students matriculated into the Institution. The Ceremony which held at the Polytechnic Peace Square had 1,248 students for National Diploma, 1,249 students for Higher National Diploma and 27 for Part time.
In his address, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Felix Uroko Attah expressed profound gratitude to the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and the Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon.Bldr Francis Ogbonnia Nwifuru for their supports to the Polytechnic, especially the President for ably piloting the affairs of the country and for his determination to change the face of Polytechnic education in Nigeria.
Dr. Attah thanked the Chairman and members of the Polytechnic Governing Council for their partnership with Management in moving the Polytechnic forward.
He congratulated the new students for their admissions into Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, and advised them to imbibe the values of the Polytechnic, which include honesty, good character and serious mindedness in pursuit of academic excellence, or face being expelled in the event of wrongful conducts.
To the joy of every member of the Polytechnic, Dr. Attah, while reeling out his achievements, announced that the Polytechnic Management had secured TETFUND intervention to increase the internal road network in the Polytechnic.
In addition, the Rector announced that Management had secured another TETFUND intervention for an ultra-modern Entrepreneurship Village to enhance the provision of vocational and entrepreneurial training for students of the Polytechnic. Also he said that the proposed new Entrepreneurship Village building will add more impetus in creating new environment for technical excellence in the Polytechnic, thus boosting the Polytechnic’s chances of taking first position in future competitions. He declared that the Polytechnic emerged third in the just concluded National Exhibition on Creativity and Innovation for Nigerian Polytechnics.
To combat the problem of lack of electricity on campus, the Rector said that the Management is exploring solar power as an option to the sole reliance on diesel generators with the attendant cost implications. He said so far, some offices such as Deputy Rector Academic office, Medical Centre ,Staff Primary School, Staff Secondary School etc. have been provided with solar power with more offices penciled down for this solar power initiative.
Dr. Attah further listed successful completion of the 2024 Staff Appraisal Exercise, provision of palliative buses to convey staff to and fro the Polytechnic, running a seamless and uninhibited academic calendar since inception of his administration, commissioning of the renovated Old Lecture Theatre among others, as part of his achievements.
He however noted that the Polytechnic is currently facing challenges relating to accreditation of programmes, low students enrolment, and problem of mismatched ND and HND results by students who are facing the risk of not being allowed to participate in NYSC programmes. He emphasized that the Management under his watch are not resting in ensuring that the challenges are resolved.
Similarly, Dr. Attah lamented the issue of dichotomy between University and Polytechnic graduates, saying that the dichotomy, despite Federal Government’s pronouncements abrogating it, remains one of the greatest challenges facing the Polytechnic sector in Nigeria. He therefore called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to enforce the abrogation of the dichotomy because Polytechnic education is central to the technological advancement of the Nation.
He thanked the parents and guardians for entrusting the Polytechnic with the training of their children, assuring them that they have made the right choice in choosing Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana.
