  1. BRIEF HISTORY OF SURVEYING AND GEO-INFORMATICS

The Department of Surveying and Geo-informatics kicked off in the year 2011 after the NBTE resource inspection around the second quarter of the year 2010 with Surv. S.I. Nnah as the pioneer Head of Department and eight other lecturers.  The Department also started with about 30(thirty) students which were admitted between September and November, 2010/2011 session into National Diploma (ND) programme.  Since then, the Department has been able to graduate streams of students in National Diploma (ND) in Surveying and Geo-informatics, until in the year 2018 when the Department got her first resource inspection to float Higher National Diploma (HND) in Surveying and Geo-informatics, the Department has graduated about three (3) streams of HND students in Surveying and Geo-informatics.

The Department has been headed by the following persons.

  • Late Bldr. R. I. J. Onyensoh
  • S. Onyezewe (Rtd.)
  • J.O. Ibedu (Rtd)
  • Surv. R. E. Iduma

The Department has also developed and advanced tremendously since its commencement with Surv. Emakoji Moses serving as present HOD.

 

 

 

  1. BENEFITS OF STUDYING SURVEYING AND GEO-INFORMATICS

Graduates of Surveying and Geo-informatics are required/needed in many areas of life endeavour like in Research Institutions, Tertiary Institutions, Federal and State Ministries of Works and Housing, Lands and Surveying Environmental, Solid Minerals, Parastatals such as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Nigerian Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEDA), State Environmental Protection Agency (SEDA), National Space and Research Centre, Urban Development Authorities, etc., as well as in oil prospecting and servicing Companies and Construction Firms.  Graduates of Surveying and Geo-informatics can also serve as Military officers, e.g. in the Army, Air force, Police force and Navy as military intelligence and Geospatial data analyst.   Other arears like Maritime industries, Aviation industries cannot be left out because they play crucial roles in these areas.  In addition, graduates can be better equipped for self-employment since their qualifications will make them become eligible for registration with the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) as Registered Surveyors.

 

  1. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO GAIN ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAMME:
  2. ND

The entry requirement into ND programme in the Department Surveying and Geo-Informatics are as follows: WASSCE/SSCE OR its equivalent (NECO, NABTEB) with credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and English Language and any other two subjects from the following subject:

Basic Surveying

Geography

Economics

Biology

Agricultural Science

Technical Drawing

At not more than two sittings.

  1. HND

National Diploma (ND) in Surveying and Geo-informatics, I.T. Letter in addition to the ND entry requirements above.
