BRIEF HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

Public Administration Department was established in 2006 as one of the departments in School of Business Studies and in Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana.

Dr. J.K.J. Okonkwo was the first Head of Department with six (6) lecturers.

In 2008 we were giving accreditation for our ND programme.  Since then, we have had series of accreditations and reaccreditations for both ND and HND programmes which were very successful.

(1)         Understand the functioning of government:  studying Public Administration helps individuals understand how governments operate and make decisions.  This knowledge can be valuable for individuals interested in pursuing a career in government or public policy.

(2)         Analytical and Problem Solving Skills:  Studying Public Administration helps develop critical thinking problem solving, and analytical skills.  These skills are valuable in a wide range of fields and industries.

(3)         Effective Leadership and Management:  Public Administration Programmes often focus on leadership and management skills, preparing individuals to effectively lead teams, organizations and government agencies.

(4)         Public Policy Development:  Studying Public Administration provides individuals with a solid foundation in Public Policy development, implementation, and evaluation.  This knowledge can be valuable for individuals interested in influencing public policy or working in the public sector.

(2)         QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO GAIN ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAMME NATIONAL DIPLOMA:

To qualify for admission into the National Diploma in Public Administration, the candidate must meet any of the following entry requirements:

The West African School Certificate (SSCE), General Certificate of Education, Ordinary Level (GCE O’Level) Senior Secondary Certificate (SSC) or any other equivalent qualification with credit pass in English Language, Mathematics, Commerce, Government/History compulsory and any two (2) other subjects from the following:- Economics, Agricultural Science/Biology/Health Science, C.R.K/IRK, Home Economics/Home Management, Business Studies, Civic Education, Photograph:- Fisheries.

(4)         ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA

The general entry requirements for HND in Public Administration Programme include:

(a)        All the requirements for the National Diploma (ND) in Public Administration with minimum of lower credit pass (CGPA) of 2.50 and above obtained from an NBTE accredited programme plus a minimum of one (1) year post ND cognate work experience in Public Administration.

(b)         In exceptional cases, the ND diplomates with a pass grade (CGPA), 2.0 – 2.49) in the ND examination that had two (2) or more years of cognate work experience may be considered for admission into the programme.

However, the number of candidates should not be more than 10% of the total student intake in each class.
