VITAL INFORMATION ABOUT METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

  • BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Metallurgical Engineering Technology was established in 2015/2016 academic session. The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) had conducted resource inspection visitation to the Department which was unsuccessful.

The Department was given approval to run National Diploma (ND) programme following the successful outcome of the resource inspection which took place in January 2022. The department admitted its first batch of the diploma student in the 2021/2022 academic session.

Some of the laboratories and workshops owned by the department include:

  • Metallography laboratory
  • Mineral Processing laboratory
  • Foundry workshop.
  • Material Testing (Strength of Materials) lab.
  • Machine Shop
  • Metal Working (fabrication & Welding ) workshop
  • Metrology Lab
  • Engineering Drawing Studio
  • Analytical/Chemical Lab
  • Computer Lab.

Not less than nine (9) staff of the department had benefitted from the Staff Development Programme of the Federal Government.

2.0 BENEFITS OF STUDYING THE COURSE

We need metals and materials to shape our world and make our society function; metals make up important parts of cars, bikes, planes, buildings, even soft drinks containers. It is almost impossible to imagine any object used in everyday life that does not require metal/materials for its fabrication. Tools and machines, from computers, typewriters, to gasoline engines, from small watches to big space crafts, all objects are made chiefly of metals. Seeing all these, one may say that as an industry and wealth producer, Metallurgical Engineering Technology is second only to farming.
Metallurgical Engineering Technology is a course for the design and development of wide range of materials for advanced and high technology applications. These include but not limited to: metals, non-metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors and composites.

The program is designed to produce Metallurgical Engineering Technicians for the following industries in Nigeria and Overseas.

  • Iron and Steel making Industries,
  • Steel Rolling Industries,
  • Machine Tools Industries,
  • Aerospace and Manufacturing,
  • Metal/Alloy Fabrication Industries,
  • Oil and Gas Industries as corrosion experts and Certified oil pipeline Welders, Mining/ equipment design and development Industries,
  • Extractive Industries,
  • Mineral Processing Industries,
  • Cement Industries,
  • Foundry/Casting,
  • Glass Manufacturing Industries,
  • Metal/Material Testing Laboratories,
  • Plastic/Ceramics Industries,
  • Metal Recycling Industries,
  • Ministries and Parastatals such as Solid Minerals, Science and Technology, Power, Works, Mines and Steel Development,
  • Consultancy services,
  • self-employment and
  • analysis of microstructure and prediction of failures in structures.
