AKANU IBIAM FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, UNWANA
DEPARTMENT OF MECHATRONICS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
MEMORANDUM
RE: REQUEST FOR STANDING INFORMATION TO BE UPLOADED TO THE POLYTECHNIC WEBSITE IN LINE WITH NBTE’S TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED QUALITY ASSURANCE IMPLEMENTATION
- BRIEF HISTORY OF MECHATRONICS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY IN AKANU IBIAM FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, UNWANA: Mechatronics Engineering is the act of analysing and design of mechanical systems, which include sensors, actuators, electrical and computer systems and mechanical structures. It also include embedded systems, robotics, auto-focus mechanisms, CAD/CAM and automation. In other to be able to operate, build and maintain hi-tech systems that ease human operations, the need to train mechatronics engineers becomes imperative. Considering this need, the then Federal Government of Nigeria under President Goodluck Jonathan mandated institutions of higher learnings in Nigeria to establish Mechatronics Engineering Departments in our institutions. In 2014, the then Rector of our institution Prof Francis Otunta initiated this move by gathering professionals/staff of our institutions that have acquired relevant trainings in mechatronics, Autotronics, Thermotronics etc. to float this noble department. The staff that were involved after going through trainings in these areas sponsored by TVET, SKILLG, UNESCO in collaboration with NBTE and TETFUND are Dr PDI Ndubuisi, Dr Mbabuike I.U, Engr Oko Item, Engr Geoffrey Okoafor, Engr Leo Madu etc. Subsequently, in late 2014, the department got their NBTE resource inspection approval. In 2015, the Department of Mechatronics Engineering Technology in Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic admitted their first National Diploma I (ND1) students in the 2015/2016 academic session. After the Accreditation exercise carried out from 25th to 29th of January 2022, NBTE granted us full accreditation approval to run National Diploma for a period of 5 years with effect from 2021/2022 academic session.
- BENEFITS OF STUDYING THE COURSE: generally, a mechatronics engineer is a complete engineer, one finds a mechanical, electrical and computer engineer all in mechatronics engineer, solving complex problems. A mechatronics engineer can work in breweries, oil companies, mining, transportation and logistics, automobile-companies, production industries, telecommunication companies, aerospace and aviation industries etc.
- QUALIFICATION REQUIRED TO GAIN ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAMME: As an engineering course, Mechatronics needs admission basics like English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and any one of Agriculture, Geography, Biology etc, A student must have atleast 5 credits which must include the subjects listed above.
