- A Brief History of the Department
The department of Mathematics/Statistics came into existence in 1997, when it was carved out from System Science Department. Subsequently, the Department got accredited to run a National Diploma (ND) programme in Statistics in the 2000/2001 academic year with initial enrolment of three (3) students.

The Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates of statistics have job prospects as statisticians in the planning units of ministries, institutions of learning, banks, industries and international organizations like World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and examination bodies like WAEC, JAMB and others. The National Diploma (ND) graduates of statistics also have job prospects as statisticians in the planning units of ministries, institutions of learning, banks, etc. as mentioned above.

Candidates must possess O/level papers with credit pass in English language, Mathematics, a basic science and two other subjects chosen from the following:
- Statistics
- Geography
- Further Mathematics/ Additional Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology/ Agricultural Science
- Economics/ Commerce
- Government
- Entry Requirements for Higher National Diploma (HND) in statistics
The entry requirement into Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in statistics entails that candidates must possess at least a lower credit in National Diploma (ND) in statistics obtained from an accredited statistics programme with one year supervised industrial experience. In exception cases, at least two years supervised industrial experience for candidates with pass grade or any other equivalent certificate.
