Brief History of Computer Science Department, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana

The Department started as a unit in the Department of Systems Science in 1991/92 to 1996/97 session with Mr. N. Ngwoke and Mr J. O. E. Onyia as the heads of department from 91/92 – 93/94 and 94/95 – 96/97 sessions respectively.

Computer Science became a full-fledged department in 1997/1998 session, with Mr. Ayatalumou C.J.C as the pioneer head of department.

The department offers National Diploma (ND) in Computer Science to both Regular I and Regular II Students, and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Software and Web Development, Networking and Cloud Computing (Soon), Artificial Intelligence (Soon) and Cyber Security and Data Protection (Soon).

The department now boasts of over 24 Lecturers with 5 PhD and 12 Master degree holders in different areas of specialization including; Artificial Intelligence, Modeling and Simulation, Software, Programming, Data Science, Cyber Security, Networking, Computer Architecture, Information Technology, etc. Also, the department has Instructors and over 18 Technologists with sophisticated practical experience.

Additionally, our school’s Computer Science program opens access to a wide range of professional options in the rapidly evolving tech world. The demand for qualified workers in fields like Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Software Development, Artificial Intelligence and more means that graduates of our program have a lot of opportunities to pursue fulfilling employment across a range of industries. Our graduates have the knowledge, skills, and real-world experience necessary to succeed in today’s cutthroat job market, whether their career goals are to work for government agencies, major IT businesses, research institutes, or start-ups.

Qualifications Required to Gain Admission into Computer Science Department, AIFPU

National Diploma (ND)

The minimum subject entry requirements for National Diploma (ND) Computer Science, harmonized by the Department and the Directorate of Academic Planning using the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) 2021 Directory and approved by the Academic Board (AB) with the corresponding subject combinations in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME)for use are as shown below:

General Guideline

  1. WASC/NECO/GCE O’level/SSCE/NABTEB Examination with Five (5) Credit Passes in subjects relevant to the Computer Science, at no more than two (2) sittings;

The Subjects must include; ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, plus any two (2) or three (3) of the following; Chemistry, Agricultural Science/Biology/Animal Husbandry/Food & Nutrition, Statistics, Economics /Commerce, Technical Drawing. Additional/Further Mathematics, Geography, ICT/Computer Studies/Data Processing, Fine Arts.

  1. NABTEB National Technical Certificate (NTC), NABTEB National Business Certificate (NBC) and NABTEB (General Education) are also accepted for admission in the department.
  2. Literature in English Language or Oral English cannot be used in place of English Language.

UTME Subject requirements (Combination) are; ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS and any one (1) from Chemistry, Biology/Agric. Science, Statistics, Economics, Geography, Computer Studies/ICT/Data Processing.

 

Higher National Diploma (HND)

You are granted HND admission into the department only on the successful completion of your ND program in an NBTE accredited Polytechnic.

The minimum entry requirement into the Higher National Diploma in the department of Computer Science is as follows:

  1. a) The National Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology or other related courses, obtained from an accredited programme, with at least the lower credit pass or
  2. b) The Nigerian certificates in Education with major in Computer Education, at no more than the merit level pass
  3. c) CPE I of CPN with at least the lower Credit.

In addition to (a), (b) and (c) above the candidate must have acquired not less than nine (9) months post ND/NCE/PCE I cognate work experience.

In exceptional cases, ND diplomats with a pass (CGPA of 2.0-2.49) in the ND examination with sixteen (16) or more months of cognate experience in the specific field may be considered for admission into the HND programme.
