Department of Architectural Technology Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana

  1. Brief History of the Department

The department of architectural technology was established in the year 2010. The department came as a result of clamor and demand for more Architects in the construction industry and the institution. The polytechnic management (Led by the then rector – Late Prof. F. O. Otunta) felt that it had more than enough qualified Architects in its nominal roll and should therefore start the department of Architectural technology. Management equally discovered that within the catchment area, there were few Architects and school of Architecture in the entire state.

In view of this, the Rector and school management deemed it fit to commence the programme and so they did and invited NBTE for resource inspection which came out successfully. Today, the department has already graduated several sets of ND and HND grandaunts.

  1. Benefits of studying Architecture
  1. Creativity and Design Skills: Architecture is a highly creative field that allows individuals to express their artistic talents and innovative ideas. Studying architecture helps develop design skills and encourages creative thinking, enabling students to come up with unique and aesthetically pleasing solutions.
  2. Problem-Solving Abilities: Architects are trained to solve complex problems related to spatial design, functionality, and aesthetics. This skill set can be applied not only in the field of architecture but also in various other professions that require analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  3. Understanding of Space and Environment: Architectural education provides a deep understanding of how spaces influence human behavior and how structures interact with the environment. This knowledge is valuable in creating spaces that are sustainable, efficient, and comfortable.
  4. Technical Proficiency: Architects need to be proficient in various technical aspects, including drafting, modeling, and understanding construction materials and technologies. These technical skills are transferable to many other industries.
  5. Communication Skills: Architects often work in multidisciplinary teams and need to communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and other professionals. Studying architecture helps develop strong communication skills, both verbal and visual.
  6. Cultural and Historical Awareness: Architecture is deeply connected to culture and history. Studying architecture provides insights into different architectural styles, historical periods, and cultural influences. This knowledge can enhance one’s appreciation for cultural diversity.
  7. Career Opportunities: A degree in architecture opens up various career opportunities. Graduates can work as architects, urban planners, interior designers, project managers, and in related fields. The demand for skilled architects exists globally.
  8. Social Impact: Architects have the opportunity to contribute to the betterment of society by designing spaces that promote well-being, sustainability, and accessibility. They can play a crucial role in shaping communities and improving the quality of life for people.
  9. Innovation and Technology: The field of architecture is continually evolving with advancements in technology and sustainable design practices. Studying architecture exposes individuals to cutting-edge technologies, materials, and methodologies, fostering an innovative mindset.
  10. Personal Fulfillment: For many individuals, creating tangible and lasting structures is inherently fulfilling. Seeing a project come to life and positively impacting the built environment can be personally rewarding.

While the benefits of studying architecture are substantial, it’s important to note that the field can be demanding and requires dedication. However, for those with a passion for design and a commitment to the built environment, the rewards can be significant.
