STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS OF THE AKANU IBIAM FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, UNWANA.LECTURE DELIVERED BY: MR E.C. EBOH, DURING THE INDUCTION/ORIENTATION OF NEWLY EMPLOYED STAFF OF THE POLYTECHNICMARCH 24 – 26, 2014 @THE POLYTECHNIC AUDITORIUM.
Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana established in October 1981 under Decree No. 33 of 1979 (as amended in 1987 and subsequently in 1993) has a very strong structure for which it has existed from inception to date.
What is Structure?
Structure is the way in which something is organized, built or put together to achieve results/goals.
The overall structure of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana (as depicted in figure 1) is broken into two, the Management structure and the Academic Structure.
The two structures contribute functionally and progressively in the day – to -day administration of the Institution.
The Management structure and functions as stated in Decree No. 33(as amended) confers legal status on the Governing Council of the Institution and the Rector, the management / running of the Institution.
The Council concerns itself with purely policy matters only whereas the day to day administration and management is entrusted in the Rector.
The Rector is the “Chief Academic and Administrative Officer” of the Polytechnic.
In order to realize the discharge of his responsibilities the Rector is adequately assisted by a number of Management staff; Deputy Rectors, (Registrar, Bursar, Polytechnic Librarian – core Management staff), Deans of school; Directors etc.
Academic Structure and the Functions
The Academic structure of the Polytechnic is patterned along the Schools and Departmental format and the structure is superintendent by the Rector who is the Chairman; other members of the Board include the Deputy Rectors, Deans of School, Heads of Academic Departments, the Polytechnic Librarian, two (2) Representatives of the Academic staff (other than Heads of Academic Departments) and the Registrar who serves as Secretary to the Board.
The Academic Board shall be responsible for: “the direction and management of academic matters of the Polytechnic including the regulation of admission of students, the award of certificates and Diplomas, scholarship prizes and other academic distinctions”
It would be recalled that the first set of the one hundred and seventy – eight(178) students were in May 1982 admitted into National diploma programmes in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, Business Administration and Management and Secretarial Studies (now Office Technology and Management).
These four (4) Departments under two (2) Schools served as pioneer Departments and Schools of this “great Poly Unwana” and later on we witnessed tremendous progress.
THE NEED FOR THE STRUCTURE AND IT FUNCTIONS FOR THE POLYTECHNIC NEWLY EMPLOYED STAFF
As “beginners” in the system, there is absolute need for you to study very well the organogram of the Polytechnic as depicted in figures 1-3 of this lecture. You are equally expected to as a matter of urgency begin to put them into practice as hardly will any work – day goes by without you coming into personal or official contacts with the offices and their Heads.
I urge you all to look out for the Instruments that established and nurtured this great Institution, examples; the Decree No. 33 and as amended; the Polytechnic Strategic Plan. (2002- 205) and the Staff Manual.
These documents will likely broaden your knowledge and more understanding of the structure and functions of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana.
I sincerely thank the Organizers of this Induction programme for finding me worthy to deliver this lecture, my apologies for any shortcoming in this lecture series.
